Windhoek, Namibia (AHN) – A flight bound for Germany was delayed after authorities in Namibia found what is believed to have been a bomb in a piece of luggage being screened at Windhoek airport. The bag in question was slated to be placed aboard an Air Berlin flight headed to Munich.

According to German police, the device contained batteries, a running watch and a detonator. Authorities are now investigating whether the device could have exploded. It was discovered at a screening checkpoint.

Passengers and their luggage were removed from the plane and were put through additional security screenings. Cargo due to be loaded on the plane was kept off the flight for further scrutiny and investigation.

After hours of delay the flight carrying 296 passengers was eventually cleared for takeoff and landed safely in Munich.

On Wednesday, German authorities issued a statement that al-Qaeda is planning to attack the country this month. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that borders would be under tighter control and the country would be stepping up security at airports and railway stations as a result of the “concrete indications” of terrorist attacks.
