New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Motorola’s new Xoom WiFi tablet will compete with the Apple iPad when it hits the stores later this month.
The Motorola (MMI) Xoom WiFi will be competitively priced against the iPad at $599 when stores nationwide begin selling it on March 27.
It will come with 32 GB of memory and uses the Honeycomb operating system developed by Google Inc. (GGOG).
News of the release caused Motorola shares to rise by as much as 3 percent during trading on Wednesday before falling slightly again, but the shares were still up by about 0.6 percent.
The Xoom WiFi comes with dual core processors, which will make it attractive to business users as well as to individuals buying it for personal use.
It is the latest entrant into competition to take a slice of the market for tablets from the iPad. Other tablets include Hewlett-Packard’s Topaz, which uses Palm’s Web OS and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook, which uses the QNX operating system.
The Xoom WiFi will be available for sale at Best Buy, RadioShack, Staples, Wal-Mart and Costco.
