London, United Kingdom (AHN Sports) – Forbes magazine, which estimates the value of sports franchises annually, recently named English Premier’s Manchester United the world’s most valuable football club for the seventh-straight year and former Man U star David Beckham football’s highest paid player.
Among the reasons Forbes lists for its crowning of Man U ($1.86 billion) atop the superficial soccer world were 9.5 million Facebook fans and a powerful global brand with 333 million supporters worldwide, including 193 million in Asia alone.
Real Madrid ($1.45 billion) of Spain’s La Liga came in second, fellow Premier League club Arsenal third at $1.19 billion, Germany’s Bayern Munich fourth at $1.1 billion and Spain’s Barcelona down one place to fifth at $975 million.
Despite a slumping worldwide economy, Forbes reports the average value of the top 20 clubs increased by 1.3% to $640 million. The average operating income, however, rose 25% to $40 million.
Forbes uses earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to estimate the clubs’ respective values.
ESPN The Magazine recently released its list of 100 best-paying temas in the world, of which Barcelona sat atop with an average annual player slary of nearly $8 million. Real Madrid ($7.4 million) came in second just ahead of MLB’s New York Yankees ($6.7 million). Man U is just 16th with an average player salary of $5.1 million.
