Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – An American Airlines flight out of Miami experienced a sudden loss of cabin pressure as a result of a small hole in the fuselage. The incident at 31,000 feet prompted the oxygen masks to deploy and forced the plane to turn around.

The crew of Flight 1640, bound for Boston, declared an emergency 30 minutes after leaving Miami and brought the Boeing 757 down safely. The plane has since been taken out of service.

American Airlines said it has dispatched a team of engineers and maintenance technicians to inspect the aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board also is investigating.

American has also been in contact with Boeing, the manufacturer of the plane.

The flight had 154 passengers and six crew members aboard.
