Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Two of the men behind social networking sensation Facebook.com have given substantial donations to a group pushing to decriminalize marijuana in California.
Facebook co-founder and billionaire Dustin Moskovitz donated $70,000 to a group supporting Proposition 19, only to be shown up by a $100,000 donation from fellow Facebook-er Sean Parker.
“More than any other initiative out there, Prop 19 will stabilize our national security and bolster our state economy. It will alleviate unnecessary overcrowding of non-violent offenders in our state jails, which in turn will help California residents,” Moskovitz told Forbes magazine.
According to Yeson19.com, proponents are working to “control cannabis like alcohol, allowing adults 21 and over in California to possess up to one ounce of cannabis, to be consumed at home or licensed establishments.”
Decriminalizing marijuana will “give state and local governments the ability to tax the sale of cannabis for adult consumption,” taking the money out of the hands of “violent drug cartels” and generating “billions in annual revenue” to fuel California’s suffering budget.
Moskovitz owns a 6 percent stake in Facebook, helping to bring his net worth to an estimated $1.4 billion. Parker founded the peer-to-peer file-sharing application Napster, and was instrumental player in Facebook’s early development.
